9:19 send gifts of food to one another. The exchange of gifts, usually food (v. 22), enabled even the poorest Jew to join in the celebrations (Neh. 8:10, 12; Deut. 16:11, 14) and is a further instance of providential care for the oppressed, here within the Jewish community itself.
