Jerusalem was originally a pagan city; the first inhabitants are variously described as Amorites, Canaanites, Jebusites, and Hittites (v. 45; Gen. 10:15, 16; Josh. 10:5; Judg. 1:21; 19:10; 2 Sam. 5:6). In this respect the city was not unlike the patriarchs, who were of pagan Syrian stock (Deut. 26:5; Josh. 24:14).
