2:1 Son of man. God addresses Ezekiel this way more than ninety times in this book. The phrase means “person, human being” and emphasizes the humanity and frailty of the prophet, all the more when it stands in such proximity to a vision of God’s glory. This use of the phrase in Ezekiel should be distinguished from its use in the Gospels as the favorite self-designation of Jesus. Jesus uses the phrase to designate Himself as the “Son of Man” known from Dan. 7:13, 14.
