43:1–5 The prophet had an earlier vision of the glory of the Lord departing from the city (10:18–22; 11:22–24); now in his vision he witnesses its return. The glory comes from the east, the direction to which it had departed (11:23). The glory of the Lord had filled the tabernacle and Solomon’s temple when they were dedicated (Ex. 40:34, 35; 1 Kin. 8:10, 11; 2 Chr. 5:13, 14; 7:1, 2; cf. Is. 60:1–3). See note 11:22–24. The temple of the restoration period, built by Zerubbabel, was not built according to Ezekiel’s vision; it was smaller than Solomon’s temple (Ezra 3:12, 13; Hag. 2:3). Yet Haggai prophesied that the glory of Zerubbabel’s temple would exceed that of Solomon’s (Hag. 2:7–9), because God’s presence would be there.
