14:13 the Hebrew. Probably an ethnic identification designating Abraham as a descendant of Eber (10:21 note). However, some contend that the term derives from habiru, a disparaging word used to designate a widely dispersed social class of semi-nomads in the ancient Near East of the second millennium b.c.
oaks of Mamre. See note 12:6.
Amorite. Sometimes a blanket term for the earlier inhabitants of Palestine (48:22; Deut. 1:44; Josh. 2:10). Mamre the Amorite, an ally of Abraham who accompanied him in battle, found blessing through his identification with Abraham (v. 24; 12:3).
