35:1 go up to Bethel. Jacob had a vow to fulfill (28:20–22; 34:1–31 note). God’s revelation at Bethel (vv. 9–13) reiterates the covenant promises to Abraham, who himself had earlier worshiped at Bethel (12:8; 13:3, 4).
