Several possible interpretations of this reference have been proposed: (a) the first man, Adam (Gen. 3); (b) a place identified with the ancient site Tell ed-Damiyeh on the Jordan River (Josh. 3:16), parallel to Gilead and Shechem (vv. 8, 9) and suggested by “there” in the second half of the verse; and (c) mankind. Because the elements of a covenant were present in God’s relationship with Adam, the doctrine of God’s covenant with Adam does not depend upon the interpretation of this text. See note Gen. 3.
