1:11 sacrifices. These were the central visible observances of Old Testament religion. Although God had ordered them to be performed, they were of no value without obedience from the heart (vv. 16, 17; 1 Sam. 15:22, 23; Ps. 51:16, 17; Mic. 6:6–8; Matt. 23:23).

do not delight. The Lord’s distaste for sacrifices offered by those who do evil (v. 16) is expressed with increasing sharpness: “I cannot endure” (v. 13); “my soul hates” (v. 14).
