20:3 my servant. The phrase refers to a position of trust and honor before God. Moses was God’s friend and servant (Ex. 14:31; Num. 12:7, 8; Deut. 34:5). Also included among God’s servants were Abraham (Ps. 105:42); Jacob (Ezek. 28:25); Joshua (Josh. 24:29); David (37:35; 2 Sam. 3:18; Ps. 132:10); the Suffering Servant (52:13–53:12); and groups of people, such as the prophets (44:26) and restored Israel (41:8, 9; 43:10; 44:1, 2, 21; 45:4; 48:20). God’s servants may suffer, but they are promised a great heritage as “servants of the Lord” (54:17; 65:8, 9, 13–15; 66:14).

three years. It could designate the time that Isaiah walked about as a sign or the duration before the sign would be realized.

sign and a portent. The prophetic style of life (8:18; cf. Deut. 13:1, 2; Jer. 32:20) pointed out the folly of relying on Egypt, because Egypt, like any nation, was vulnerable.
