deaf . . . blind. These words are used here as figures for the people’s former spiritual conditions. The “deaf” are those formerly deaf to the message of God (42:18, 19; 43:8; cf. 6:10; 29:9). The “blind” formerly wandered from and did not discern the ways of God (42:7, 16; 56:10; 59:10; Lam. 4:14). The restoration of the spiritually “deaf” and “blind” is fulfilled today in Christ (61:1).
