5:14 Sheol. This is the Hebrew word for “the grave,” used almost exclusively in poetry. See Prov. 9:18 and notes. Isaiah portrays death as a terrible beast that devours anyone without regard to social class, both the “honored” and the “multitude” (v. 13).
