the seventh day. The number suggests a parallel to the work of creation. Just as the work of creation reached its goal in the seventh day (Gen. 2:1–3), so the work of redemption from Egypt reaches its goal with possession of the Promised Land. Sabbath rest is related to both creation and redemption (Ex. 20:8–11 and Deut. 5:12–15; Josh. 1:13 note). In Heb. 3:7–4:11 “rest” refers to the ultimate goal of God’s people.
