Luke 4:3–13

4:3–13 The devil seeks to deflect Jesus from His divinely appointed mission. In His victory over Satan, Jesus binds the strong man and proceeds to plunder his possessions (11:21, 22). Luke’s account highlights the parallel between Jesus’ temptation and the trials of Israel in the wilderness. Jesus was tempted for forty days in the wilderness, and Israel wandered for forty years in the wilderness (Num. 14:34). Israel failed the test of obedience, while Jesus was fully obedient to the Father.
