9:59 bury my father. The father may have been alive. The words would then indicate that the potential disciple wanted to continue to care for his father until his death. If the father was dead, Jesus’ words are all the more shocking, since filial piety demanded that a son should look after the burial arrangements for his father. Either way, Jesus is saying that the demands of the kingdom override all earthly loyalties.
