14:53–15:15 This section of the narrative concerns Jesus’ trials before the Jews and the Romans. These trials were full of errors and irregularities, with the principles of justice subordinated to expediency and politics. The Jewish trial had three parts: a hearing before Annas (reported only in John 18:12–14, 19–23); a trial before the Sanhedrin, led by Caiaphas in his house (14:53–65); and an early morning session of the Sanhedrin (15:1). The Roman trial was likewise in three parts: before Pilate (15:2–5); before Herod Antipas, (reported only in Luke 23:6–12); and before Pilate again (15:6–15).
