15:1 as soon as it was morning. Probably at dawn. The purpose of the new meeting was apparently to draw up a civil charge (cf. Luke 23:2).
Pilate. The Apostles’ Creed mentions Pilate as the representative of Rome who faced Jesus in this trial. Pilate was Roman governor of Judea from a.d. 26 to 36. As magistrate, only he had the legal right to pronounce capital sentences (14:64 note).
