2:25 he said to them, “Have you never read . . . ?” Jesus’ question suggests an ironic criticism of their knowledge of Scripture (John 3:10; 5:39, 47). Jesus does not justify Himself by laying Scripture aside. He rather shows His understanding of its depth and its proper application to human need.

Christ, as the Son of David allows His disciples to fulfill their physical needs so they might continue their mission of redemption, a work that is always lawful to be done.
