Matt 10:4

10:4 Simon the Cananaean. A member of a revolutionary movement (“Simon . . . called the Zealot,” Luke 6:15). According to Josephus, the Zealots were a political party whose religious enthusiasm led them to advocate armed rebellion against Rome. Simon may have been associated with this movement previously and continued to be called “the Cananaean” or “Zealot” to distinguish him from Simon Peter.
