The Old Testament reveals that ultimately God will punish the wicked (24:19, 20) and reward the righteous (23:17, 18; 24:15, 16), but it does not present a fully developed doctrine of punishment in the afterlife. The prosperity of the wicked was a continuing problem (Ps. 37:7; 73:3–14). The New Testament clearly indicates that the righteous judgment of God falls on the wicked, whether in this life or the next (Luke 16:23, 24; Rev. 14:10–12; 20:15).
