3:8 against terror by night. Solomon’s men would form a bodyguard for protection from marauders, especially as weddings were celebrated at nightfall. But the verse has a double reference. There is also the “night” introduced in 3:1, which was spoiled by the girl’s own “terror by night.” These fears are banished, at least for a time, by the splendid vision of Solomon with his fighting men (vv. 2–4 note).
