1:7 For an overseer. Paul’s casual shift from “elder” to “overseer” shows that he understands the two terms as referring to the same office: “elder” suggesting one’s character (spiritually mature) and “overseer” suggesting one’s task (Acts 20:17, 28).
greedy for gain. One should not view church leadership as an opportunity for making money (v. 11; 1 Tim. 6:5, 10). Paul does support the concept of remuneration for certain church leaders (1 Tim. 5:17).
