But I say unto you, swear not at all: neither by Heaven, for it is God’s throne;

But I say to you, do not make an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
But I tell you, Do not bind yourselves by an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne;
But I say to you that you must not pledge at all. You must not pledge by heaven, because it’s God’s throne.
But I tell you not to swear at all — not ‘by heaven,’ because it is God’s throne;
But I tell you not to swear by anything when you make a promise! Heaven is God's throne, so don't swear by heaven.
But *I* say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God;
But I say to you not to swear-with-an-oath at all—
But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God:
But I tell you, when you make a promise, don’t try to make it stronger with a vow. Don’t make a vow using the name of heaven, because heaven is God’s throne.
But what I tell you is this. Do not use any name to make a promise stronger. Do not use the words “by heaven” to make a promise stronger. Heaven is the place where God rules. Do not use the words “by the earth” to make a promise stronger. The earth is the place where God rests his feet.
But I tell you, do not swear at all: not by heaven, because it is God’s throne;

“Again, you have heard that the people in the old days were told—‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord’, but I say to you, don’t use an oath at all. Don’t swear by Heaven for it is God’s throne, nor by the earth for it is his footstool, nor by Jerusalem for it is the city of the great king. No, and don’t swear by your own head, for you cannot make a single hair—white or black! Whatever you have to say let your ‘yes’ be a plain ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ a plain ‘no’—anything more than this has a taint of evil.

But I say: Don’t make any vows! And even to say ‘By heavens!’ is a sacred vow to God, for the heavens are God’s throne.
“And don’t say anything you don’t mean. This counsel is embedded deep in our traditions. You only make things worse when you lay down a smoke screen of pious talk, saying, ‘I’ll pray for you,’ and never doing it, or saying, ‘God be with you,’ and not meaning it. You don’t make your words true by embellishing them with religious lace. In making your speech sound more religious, it becomes less true. Just say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ When you manipulate words to get your own way, you go wrong.

But what I tell you is this: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, since it is God’s throne,

But here is what I tell you. Do not make any promises like that at all. Do not make them in the name of heaven. That is God’s throne.

I tell you, do not use strong words when you make a promise. Do not promise by heaven. It is the place where God is.

But I tell you this: do not ever swear an oath. What is an oath? You cannot say, “I swear by heaven”—for heaven is not yours to swear by; it is God’s throne.
