16 “Come near(A) me and listen(B) to this:

“From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret;(C)
    at the time it happens, I am there.”

And now the Sovereign Lord(D) has sent(E) me,
    endowed with his Spirit.(F)

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(G) the Holy One(H) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(I) you what is best for you,
    who directs(J) you in the way(K) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(L) to my commands,
    your peace(M) would have been like a river,(N)
    your well-being(O) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(P) would have been like the sand,(Q)
    your children like its numberless grains;(R)
their name would never be blotted out(S)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(T) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(U)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(V)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(W) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(X) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(Y) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(Z)

22 “There is no peace,”(AA) says the Lord, “for the wicked.”(AB)

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen(AC) to me, you islands;(AD)
    hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born(AE) the Lord called(AF) me;
    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.(AG)
He made my mouth(AH) like a sharpened sword,(AI)
    in the shadow of his hand(AJ) he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow(AK)
    and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,(AL)
    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.(AM)
But I said, “I have labored in vain;(AN)
    I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,(AO)
    and my reward(AP) is with my God.”(AQ)

And now the Lord says—
    he who formed me in the womb(AR) to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel(AS) to himself,
for I am[a] honored(AT) in the eyes of the Lord
    and my God has been my strength(AU)
he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant(AV)
    to restore the tribes of Jacob
    and bring back those of Israel I have kept.(AW)
I will also make you a light(AX) for the Gentiles,(AY)
    that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”(AZ)

This is what the Lord says—
    the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel(BA)
to him who was despised(BB) and abhorred by the nation,
    to the servant of rulers:
“Kings(BC) will see you and stand up,
    princes will see and bow down,(BD)
because of the Lord, who is faithful,(BE)
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen(BF) you.”

Restoration of Israel

This is what the Lord says:

“In the time of my favor(BG) I will answer you,
    and in the day of salvation I will help you;(BH)
I will keep(BI) you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people,(BJ)
to restore the land(BK)
    and to reassign its desolate inheritances,(BL)
to say to the captives,(BM) ‘Come out,’
    and to those in darkness,(BN) ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.(BO)
10 They will neither hunger nor thirst,(BP)
    nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.(BQ)
He who has compassion(BR) on them will guide(BS) them
    and lead them beside springs(BT) of water.
11 I will turn all my mountains into roads,
    and my highways(BU) will be raised up.(BV)
12 See, they will come from afar(BW)
    some from the north, some from the west,(BX)
    some from the region of Aswan.[b]

13 Shout for joy,(BY) you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;(BZ)
    burst into song, you mountains!(CA)
For the Lord comforts(CB) his people
    and will have compassion(CC) on his afflicted ones.(CD)

14 But Zion(CE) said, “The Lord has forsaken(CF) me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child(CG) she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!(CH)
16 See, I have engraved(CI) you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls(CJ) are ever before me.
17 Your children hasten back,
    and those who laid you waste(CK) depart from you.
18 Lift up your eyes and look around;
    all your children gather(CL) and come to you.
As surely as I live,(CM)” declares the Lord,
    “you will wear(CN) them all as ornaments;
    you will put them on, like a bride.

19 “Though you were ruined and made desolate(CO)
    and your land laid waste,(CP)
now you will be too small for your people,(CQ)
    and those who devoured(CR) you will be far away.
20 The children born during your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
    give us more space to live in.’(CS)
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who bore me these?(CT)
I was bereaved(CU) and barren;
    I was exiled and rejected.(CV)
    Who brought these(CW) up?
I was left(CX) all alone,(CY)
    but these—where have they come from?’”

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord(CZ) says:

“See, I will beckon to the nations,
    I will lift up my banner(DA) to the peoples;
they will bring(DB) your sons in their arms
    and carry your daughters on their hips.(DC)
23 Kings(DD) will be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.(DE)
They will bow down(DF) before you with their faces to the ground;
    they will lick the dust(DG) at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;(DH)
    those who hope(DI) in me will not be disappointed.(DJ)

24 Can plunder be taken from warriors,(DK)
    or captives be rescued from the fierce[c]?

25 But this is what the Lord says:

“Yes, captives(DL) will be taken from warriors,(DM)
    and plunder retrieved from the fierce;(DN)
I will contend with those who contend with you,(DO)
    and your children I will save.(DP)
26 I will make your oppressors(DQ) eat(DR) their own flesh;
    they will be drunk on their own blood,(DS) as with wine.
Then all mankind will know(DT)
    that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(DU)
    your Redeemer,(DV) the Mighty One of Jacob.(DW)

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(DX)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(DY) you?
Because of your sins(DZ) you were sold;(EA)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(EB)
Was my arm too short(EC) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(ED) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(EE) I dry up the sea,(EF)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(EG)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(EH)
    and make sackcloth(EI) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(EJ) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(EK)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(EL)
He wakens me morning by morning,(EM)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(EN)
The Sovereign Lord(EO) has opened my ears;(EP)
    I have not been rebellious,(EQ)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(ER) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(ES)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(ET)
Because the Sovereign Lord(EU) helps(EV) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(EW)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(EX)
He who vindicates(EY) me is near.(EZ)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(FA)
    Let us face each other!(FB)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(FC) who helps(FD) me.
    Who will condemn(FE) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(FF) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(FG) the Lord
    and obeys(FH) the word of his servant?(FI)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(FJ)
trust(FK) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(FL)
go, walk in the light of your fires(FM)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(FN)
    You will lie down in torment.(FO)
