The Burnt Offering

1 The Lord called to Moses^(A) and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.^(B) He said, ² “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord,^(C) bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.^(D)

³ “‘If the offering is a burnt offering^(E) from the herd,^(F) you are to offer a male without defect.^(G) You must present it at the entrance to the tent^(H) of meeting so that it will be acceptable^(I) to the Lord. ⁴ You are to lay your hand on the head^(J) of the burnt offering,^(K) and it will be accepted^(L) on your behalf to make atonement^(M) for you. ⁵ You are to slaughter^(N) the young bull^(O) before the Lord, and then Aaron’s sons^(P) the priests shall bring the blood and splash it against the sides of the altar^(Q) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ⁶ You are to skin^(R) the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.^{(S) 7} The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood^(T) on the fire. ⁸ Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat,^(U) on the wood^(V) that is burning on the altar. ⁹ You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(W) and the priest is to burn all of it^(X) on the altar.^(Y) It is a burnt offering,^(Z) a food offering,^(AA) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(AB)

¹⁰ “‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep^(AC) or the goats,^(AD) you are to offer a male without defect. ¹¹ You are to slaughter it at the north side of the altar^(AE) before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.^{(AF) 12} You are to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat,^(AG) on the wood that is burning on the altar. ¹³ You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,^(AH) and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them^(AI) on the altar.^(AJ) It is a burnt offering,^(AK) a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

¹⁴ “‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon.^{(AL) 15} The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head^(AM) and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar.^{(AN) 16} He is to remove the crop and the feathers^[a] and throw them down east of the altar where the ashes^(AO) are. ¹⁷ He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely,^(AP) and then the priest shall burn it on the wood^(AQ) that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

The Burnt Offering

⁸ The Lord said to Moses: ⁹ “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering^(A): The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.^{(B) 10} The priest shall then put on his linen clothes,^(C) with linen undergarments next to his body,^(D) and shall remove the ashes^(E) of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. ¹¹ Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.^{(F) 12} The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood^(G) and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat^(H) of the fellowship offerings^(I) on it. ¹³ The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

¹⁴ “‘These are the regulations for the grain offering:^(J) Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. ¹⁵ The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense^(K) on the grain offering,^(L) and burn the memorial^[a] portion^(M) on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ¹⁶ Aaron and his sons^(N) shall eat the rest^(O) of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast^(P) in the sanctuary area;^(Q) they are to eat it in the courtyard^(R) of the tent of meeting.^{(S) 17} It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share^(T) of the food offerings presented to me.^(U) Like the sin offering^[b] and the guilt offering, it is most holy.^{(V) 18} Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it.^(W) For all generations to come^(X) it is his perpetual share^(Y) of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.^[c](Z)’”

¹⁹ The Lord also said to Moses, ²⁰ “This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the Lord on the day he^[d] is anointed:^(AA) a tenth of an ephah^[e](AB) of the finest flour^(AC) as a regular grain offering,^(AD) half of it in the morning and half in the evening. ²¹ It must be prepared with oil on a griddle;^(AE) bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken^[f] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ²² The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest^(AF) shall prepare it. It is the Lord’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely.^{(AG) 23} Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, ² “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time^(A) my food^(B) offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’^{(C) 3} Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect,^(D) as a regular burnt offering each day.^{(E) 4} Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight,^{(F) 5} together with a grain offering^(G) of a tenth of an ephah^[a] of the finest flour^(H) mixed with a quarter of a hin^[b] of oil^(I) from pressed olives. ⁶ This is the regular burnt offering^(J) instituted at Mount Sinai^(K) as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.^{(L) 7} The accompanying drink offering^(M) is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink^(N) with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary.^{(O) 8} Offer the second lamb at twilight,^(P) along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning.^(Q) This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(R)

⁸ “Say to them: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice ⁹ and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent^(A) of meeting^(B) to sacrifice it to the Lord^(C) must be cut off from the people of Israel.

The Grain Offering

2 “‘When anyone brings a grain offering^(A) to the Lord, their offering is to be of the finest flour.^(B) They are to pour olive oil^(C) on it,^(D) put incense on it^{(E) 2} and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour^(F) and oil, together with all the incense,^(G) and burn this as a memorial^[a] portion^(H) on the altar, a food offering,^(I) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^{(J) 3} The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(K) it is a most holy^(L) part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.

⁴ “‘If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven,^(M) it is to consist of the finest flour: either thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in or thin loaves^(N) made without yeast and brushed with olive oil.^{(O) 5} If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle,^(P) it is to be made of the finest flour mixed with oil, and without yeast. ⁶ Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. ⁷ If your grain offering is cooked in a pan,^(Q) it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. ⁸ Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. ⁹ He shall take out the memorial portion^(R) from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^{(S) 10} The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;^(T) it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord.^(U)

¹¹ “‘Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast,^(V) for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord. ¹² You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits,^(W) but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. ¹³ Season all your grain offerings with salt.^(X) Do not leave the salt of the covenant^(Y) of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

¹⁴ “‘If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits^(Z) to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire. ¹⁵ Put oil and incense^(AA) on it; it is a grain offering. ¹⁶ The priest shall burn the memorial portion^(AB) of the crushed grain and the oil, together with all the incense,^(AC) as a food offering presented to the Lord.^(AD)

Supplementary Offerings

15 The Lord said to Moses, ² “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘After you enter the land I am giving you^(A) as a home ³ and you present to the Lord food offerings from the herd or the flock,^(B) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord^(C)—whether burnt offerings^(D) or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings^(E) or festival offerings^(F)— ⁴ then the person who brings an offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering^(G) of a tenth of an ephah^[a] of the finest flour^(H) mixed with a quarter of a hin^[b] of olive oil. ⁵ With each lamb^(I) for the burnt offering or the sacrifice, prepare a quarter of a hin of wine^(J) as a drink offering.^(K)

⁶ “‘With a ram^(L) prepare a grain offering^(M) of two-tenths of an ephah^[c](N) of the finest flour mixed with a third of a hin^[d] of olive oil,^{(O) 7} and a third of a hin of wine^(P) as a drink offering.^(Q) Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^(R)

⁸ “‘When you prepare a young bull^(S) as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow^(T) or a fellowship offering^(U) to the Lord, ⁹ bring with the bull a grain offering^(V) of three-tenths of an ephah^[e](W) of the finest flour mixed with half a hin^[f] of olive oil, ¹⁰ and also bring half a hin of wine^(X) as a drink offering.^(Y) This will be a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^{(Z) 11} Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat, is to be prepared in this manner. ¹² Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare.^(AA)

¹³ “‘Everyone who is native-born^(AB) must do these things in this way when they present a food offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.^{(AC) 14} For the generations to come,^(AD) whenever a foreigner^(AE) or anyone else living among you presents a food^(AF) offering^(AG) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, they must do exactly as you do. ¹⁵ The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.^(AH) You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Lord: ¹⁶ The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigner residing among you.^(AI)’”

¹⁷ The Lord said to Moses, ¹⁸ “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land to which I am taking you^{(AJ) 19} and you eat the food of the land,^(AK) present a portion as an offering to the Lord.^{(AL) 20} Present a loaf from the first of your ground meal^(AM) and present it as an offering from the threshing floor.^{(AN) 21} Throughout the generations to come^(AO) you are to give this offering to the Lord from the first of your ground meal.^(AP)
