    the vines of Sibmah^(C) also.
The rulers of the nations
    have trampled down the choicest vines,^(D)
which once reached Jazer^(E)
    and spread toward the desert.
Their shoots spread out^(F)
    and went as far as the sea.^[a](G)

⁴ The earth dries up^(A) and withers,^(B)
    the world languishes and withers,
    the heavens^(C) languish with the earth.^(D)

⁷ The new wine dries up^(A) and the vine withers;^(B)
    all the merrymakers groan.^(C)

¹¹ In the streets they cry out^(A) for wine;^(B)
    all joy turns to gloom,^(C)
    all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.

⁹ The land dries up^(A) and wastes away,
    Lebanon^(B) is ashamed and withers;^(C)
Sharon^(D) is like the Arabah,
    and Bashan^(E) and Carmel^(F) drop their leaves.

²⁷ Their people, drained of power,
    are dismayed and put to shame.
They are like plants in the field,
    like tender green shoots,
like grass^(A) sprouting on the roof,^(B)
    scorched^[a] before it grows up.

⁷ The grass withers^(A) and the flowers fall,
    because the breath^(B) of the Lord blows^(C) on them.
    Surely the people are grass.
