New English Translation
55 He drove the nations out from before them;
he assigned them their tribal allotments[a]
and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down.[b]
56 Yet they challenged and defied[c] God Most High,[d]
and did not obey[e] his commands.[f]
57 They were unfaithful[g] and acted as treacherously as[h] their ancestors;
they were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow.[i]
