1 Corinthians 10:6-8

⁶We must learn from those things that happened to our ancestors. We must not want to do very bad things, like they did. ⁷Do not worship idols, as some of them did. The Bible says: ‘The people sat down to eat and to drink. After that, they got up from their meal and they danced.’^[a]

⁸Nor must we ever have sex in wrong ways. Some of our ancestors did that, and 23,000 of them died in one day as a result.^[b]

⁶Now these things occurred as examples^(A) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. ⁷Do not be idolaters,^(B) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”^[a]^(C) ⁸We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.^(D)
