We must learn from those things that happened to our ancestors. We must not want to do very bad things, like they did. Do not worship idols, as some of them did. The Bible says: ‘The people sat down to eat and to drink. After that, they got up from their meal and they danced.’[a]

Nor must we ever have sex in wrong ways. Some of our ancestors did that, and 23,000 of them died in one day as a result.[b]

Now these things occurred as examples(A) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters,(B) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](C) We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(D)
