It is really not important if there are things called gods, in heaven or on earth. (And there are many things that people call “gods” and “lords.”) But for us there is only one God. He is our Father. All things came from him, and we live for him. And there is only one Lord—Jesus Christ. All things were made through Jesus, and we also have life through him.

But not all people know this. Until now, some people have had the habit of worshiping idols. So now when they eat meat, they still feel as if it belongs to an idol. They are not sure that it is right to eat this meat. When they eat it, they feel guilty.

For even if there are so-called gods,(A) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God,(B) the Father,(C) from whom all things came(D) and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord,(E) Jesus Christ, through whom all things came(F) and through whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge.(G) Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak,(H) it is defiled.
