⁶If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true;

New International Version

⁶If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,^(A) we lie and do not live out the truth.^(B)

⁴Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist;

⁴Whoever says, “I know him,”^(A) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.^(B)

¹⁷How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?^(A)

¹⁷If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,^(A) how can the love of God be in that person?^(B)
