5 And though he loved Hannah, he would give her only one choice portion[a] because the Lord had given her no children. 6 So Peninnah would taunt Hannah and make fun of her because the Lord had kept her from having children. 7 Year after year it was the same—Peninnah would taunt Hannah as they went to the Tabernacle.[b] Each time, Hannah would be reduced to tears and would not even eat.

5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(A) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(B) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(C) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(D)
