10 As he finished sacrificing the burnt offering, Samuel came, and Saul went to greet him.
11 Samuel asked, “What have you done?”
Saul replied, “I saw the troops were scattering. You didn’t come when you said you would, and the Philistines were assembling at Michmash. 12 So I thought, ‘Now, the Philistines will come against me at Gilgal, but I haven’t sought Yahweh’s favor.’ I felt pressured into sacrificing the burnt offering.”

New International Version
10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel(A) arrived, and Saul went out to greet(B) him.
11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel.
Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,(C) 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,(D) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.(E)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
