1 Samuel 14:43-45

Good News Translation

⁴³Then Saul asked Jonathan, “What have you done?”

Jonathan answered, “I ate a little honey with the stick I was holding. Here I am—I am ready to die.”

⁴⁴Saul said to him, “May God strike me dead if you are not put to death!”

⁴⁵But the people said to Saul, “Will Jonathan, who won this great victory for Israel, be put to death? No! We promise by the living Lord that he will not lose even a hair from his head. What he did today was done with God's help.” So the people saved Jonathan from being put to death.

⁴³Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”^(A)

So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey^(B) with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”

⁴⁴Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,^(C) if you do not die, Jonathan.^(D)”

⁴⁵But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair^(E) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued^(F) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

⁴³Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

⁴⁴And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

⁴⁵And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
