Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God(A) our Savior(B) and of Christ Jesus our hope,(C)

To Timothy(D) my true son(E) in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,(G) stay there in Ephesus(H) so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines(I) any longer or to devote themselves to myths(J) and endless genealogies.(K) Such things promote controversial speculations(L) rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart(M) and a good conscience(N) and a sincere faith.(O) Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers(P) of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.(Q)

We know that the law is good(R) if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous(S) but for lawbreakers and rebels,(T) the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine(U) 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.(V)

The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,(W) that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.(X) 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor(Y) and a violent man, I was shown mercy(Z) because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.(AA) 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,(AB) along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.(AC)

15 Here is a trustworthy saying(AD) that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners(AE)—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy(AF) so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience(AG) as an example for those who would believe(AH) in him and receive eternal life.(AI) 17 Now to the King(AJ) eternal, immortal,(AK) invisible,(AL) the only God,(AM) be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AN)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(AO) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(AP) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(AQ) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(AR) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(AS) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(AT) and Alexander,(AU) whom I have handed over to Satan(AV) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(AW) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(AX) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(AY) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(AZ) God our Savior,(BA) who wants(BB) all people(BC) to be saved(BD) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(BE) For there is one God(BF) and one mediator(BG) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(BH) who gave himself as a ransom(BI) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(BJ) at the proper time.(BK) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(BL)—and a true and faithful teacher(BM) of the Gentiles.(BN)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(BO) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(BP) 10 but with good deeds,(BQ) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(BR) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(BS) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(BT) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(BU) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(BV) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(BW) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(BX) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(BY) faithful to his wife,(BZ) temperate,(CA) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(CB) able to teach,(CC) not given to drunkenness,(CD) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(CE) not a lover of money.(CF) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[d] respect.(CG) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(CH) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(CI) and fall under the same judgment(CJ) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(CK) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(CL)

In the same way, deacons[e](CM) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(CN) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(CO) 10 They must first be tested;(CP) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[f] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(CQ) but temperate(CR) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(CS) and must manage his children and his household well.(CT) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Reasons for Paul’s Instructions

14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(CU) of the living God,(CV) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(CW) from which true godliness(CX) springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,(CY)
    was vindicated by the Spirit,[g]
was seen by angels,
    was preached among the nations,(CZ)
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.(DA)

The Spirit(DB) clearly says that in later times(DC) some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits(DD) and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.(DE) They forbid people to marry(DF) and order them to abstain from certain foods,(DG) which God created(DH) to be received with thanksgiving(DI) by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good,(DJ) and nothing is to be rejected(DK) if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God(DL) and prayer.

If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,[h] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith(DM) and of the good teaching that you have followed.(DN) Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales;(DO) rather, train yourself to be godly.(DP) For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things,(DQ) holding promise for both the present life(DR) and the life to come.(DS) This is a trustworthy saying(DT) that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God,(DU) who is the Savior of all people,(DV) and especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.(DW) 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you(DX) because you are young, but set an example(DY) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith(DZ) and in purity. 13 Until I come,(EA) devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,(EB) to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy(EC) when the body of elders(ED) laid their hands on you.(EE)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save(EF) both yourself and your hearers.

Widows, Elders and Slaves

Do not rebuke an older man(EG) harshly,(EH) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(EI) as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(EJ) But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(EK) for this is pleasing to God.(EL) The widow who is really in need(EM) and left all alone puts her hope in God(EN) and continues night and day to pray(EO) and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(EP) Give the people these instructions,(EQ) so that no one may be open to blame. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(ER) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(ES) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(ET) washing the feet(EU) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(EV) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.

11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(EW) who talk nonsense,(EX) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(EY) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(EZ) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(FA)

16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(FB)

17 The elders(FC) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(FD) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[i](FE) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[j](FF) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(FG) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(FH) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(FI) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(FJ) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(FK) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(FL) and do not share in the sins of others.(FM) Keep yourself pure.(FN)

23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(FO) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect,(FP) so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.(FQ) Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers.(FR) Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[k] of their slaves.

False Teachers and the Love of Money

These are the things you are to teach and insist on.(FS) If anyone teaches otherwise(FT) and does not agree to the sound instruction(FU) of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited(FV) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(FW) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(FX) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But godliness with contentment(FY) is great gain.(FZ) For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(GA) But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(GB) Those who want to get rich(GC) fall into temptation and a trap(GD) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(GE) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(GF) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(GG)

Final Charge to Timothy

11 But you, man of God,(GH) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(GI) faith, love,(GJ) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(GK) of the faith. Take hold of(GL) the eternal life(GM) to which you were called when you made your good confession(GN) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(GO) made the good confession,(GP) I charge you(GQ) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(GR) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(GS) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(GT)—God, the blessed(GU) and only Ruler,(GV) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(GW) 16 who alone is immortal(GX) and who lives in unapproachable light,(GY) whom no one has seen or can see.(GZ) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(HA)

17 Command those who are rich(HB) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(HC) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(HD) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(HE) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(HF) and to be generous and willing to share.(HG) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(HH) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(HI) the life that is truly life.

20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted(HJ) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter(HK) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.(HL)

Grace be with you all.(HM)

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

11 These things command and teach.

12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

Honour widows that are widows indeed.

But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.

But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.

And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man.

10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;

12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.

16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.

25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Greeting

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,

To Timothy, a (A)true son in the faith:

(B)Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

No Other Doctrine

As I urged you (C)when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may [a]charge some (D)that they teach no other doctrine, (E)nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. Now (F)the purpose of the commandment is love (G)from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from [b]sincere faith, from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to (H)idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

But we know that the law is (I)good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is [c]contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the (J)blessed God which was (K)committed to my trust.

Glory to God for His Grace(L)

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has (M)enabled me, (N)because He counted me faithful, (O)putting me into the ministry, 13 although (P)I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an [d]insolent man; but I obtained mercy because (Q)I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 (R)And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, (S)with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 (T)This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that (U)Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to (V)the King eternal, (W)immortal, (X)invisible, to [e]God (Y)who alone is wise, (Z)be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Fight the Good Fight

18 This [f]charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are (AA)Hymenaeus and (AB)Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to (AC)blaspheme.

Pray for All Men

Therefore I [g]exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, (AD)for kings and (AE)all who are in [h]authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and [i]reverence. For this is (AF)good and acceptable in the sight (AG)of God our Savior, (AH)who desires all men to be saved (AI)and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (AJ)For there is one God and (AK)one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, (AL)who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (AM)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth [j]in Christ and not lying—(AN)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Men and Women in the Church

I desire therefore that the men pray (AO)everywhere, (AP)lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the (AQ)women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [k]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 (AR)but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And (AS)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications of Overseers

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a [l]bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not [m]given to wine, not violent, [n]not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not [o]covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); not a [p]novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the (AT)snare of the devil.

Qualifications of Deacons

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, (AU)not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the [q]mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not [r]slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons (AV)obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The Great Mystery

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and [s]ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the [t]mystery of godliness:

(AW)God[u] was manifested in the flesh,
(AX)Justified in the Spirit,
(AY)Seen by angels,
(AZ)Preached among the Gentiles,
(BA)Believed on in the world,
(BB)Received up in glory.

The Great Apostasy

Now the Spirit [v]expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed (BC)to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, (BD)speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience (BE)seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is [w]sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ

If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, (BF)nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. But (BG)reject profane and old wives’ fables, and (BH)exercise yourself toward godliness. For (BI)bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, (BJ)having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end [x]we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, (BK)who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach.

Take Heed to Your Ministry

12 Let no one [y]despise your youth, but be an (BL)example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [z]in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to [aa]doctrine. 14 (BM)Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy (BN)with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Treatment of Church Members

Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

Honor True Widows

Honor widows who are really widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and (BO)to repay their parents; for this is [ab]good and acceptable before God. Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers (BP)night and day. But she who lives in [ac]pleasure is dead while she lives. And these things command, that they may be blameless. But if anyone does not provide for his own, (BQ)and especially for those of his household, (BR)he has denied the faith (BS)and is worse than an unbeliever.

Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, 10 well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

11 But [ad]refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, 12 having condemnation because they have cast off their first [ae]faith. 13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 14 Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any believing [af]man or woman has widows, let them [ag]relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.

Honor the Elders

17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, (BT)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, (BU)“The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except (BV)from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.

21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the [ah]elect angels that you observe these things without (BW)prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. 22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor (BX)share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.

23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent [ai]infirmities.

24 Some men’s sins are (BY)clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.

Honor Masters

Let as many (BZ)bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

Error and Greed

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to (CA)wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, (CB)and to the [aj]doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, [ak]useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. [al]From (CC)such withdraw yourself.

Now godliness with (CD)contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, [am]and it is (CE)certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be (CF)content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The Good Confession

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus (CG)who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only [an]Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in (CH)unapproachable light, (CI)whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Instructions to the Rich

17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain (CJ)riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things (CK)to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 (CL)storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Guard the Faith

20 O Timothy! (CM)Guard what was committed to your trust, (CN)avoiding the profane and [ao]idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

Grace be with you. Amen.

Greeting

Paul, (A)an apostle of Christ Jesus (B)by command of (C)God our Savior and of Christ Jesus (D)our hope,

To Timothy, (E)my true child in the faith:

(F)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Warning Against False Teachers

(G)As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not (H)to teach any different doctrine, nor (I)to devote themselves to myths and endless (J)genealogies, which promote (K)speculations rather than the stewardship[a] from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love (L)that issues from a pure heart and (M)a good conscience and (N)a sincere faith. Certain persons, by (O)swerving from these, have wandered away into (P)vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, (Q)without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Now we know that (R)the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the (S)law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers,[b] liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (T)sound[c] doctrine, 11 in accordance with (U)the gospel of the glory of (V)the blessed God (W)with which I have been entrusted.

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

12 I thank him (X)who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, (Y)appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, (Z)persecutor, and insolent opponent. But (AA)I received mercy (AB)because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and (AC)the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the (AD)faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is (AE)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus (AF)came into the world to save sinners, (AG)of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To (AH)the King of the ages, (AI)immortal, (AJ)invisible, (AK)the only God, (AL)be honor and glory forever and ever.[d] Amen.

18 This charge (AM)I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with (AN)the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may (AO)wage the good warfare, 19 (AP)holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have (AQ)made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are (AR)Hymenaeus and (AS)Alexander, whom I (AT)have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to (AU)blaspheme.

Pray for All People

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, (AV)for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and (AW)dignified in every way. This is good, and (AX)it is pleasing in the sight of (AY)God our Savior, who desires (AZ)all people to be saved and (BA)to come to (BB)the knowledge of the truth. For (BC)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[e] Christ Jesus, (BD)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is (BE)the testimony given (BF)at the proper time. (BG)For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ((BH)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), (BI)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that (BJ)in every place the men should pray, (BK)lifting (BL)holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also (BM)that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 (BN)but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly (BO)with all submissiveness. 12 (BP)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (BQ)For Adam was formed first, (BR)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (BS)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (BT)childbearing—if they continue in (BU)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is (BV)trustworthy: If anyone aspires to (BW)the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore (BX)an overseer[f] must be above reproach, (BY)the husband of one wife,[g] (BZ)sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, (CA)hospitable, (CB)able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but (CC)gentle, not quarrelsome, (CD)not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity (CE)keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for (CF)God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may (CG)become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by (CH)outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into (CI)a snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

(CJ)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[h] (CK)not addicted to much wine, (CL)not greedy for dishonest gain. They must (CM)hold the mystery of the faith with (CN)a clear conscience. 10 And (CO)let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 (CP)Their wives likewise[i] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, (CQ)faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be (CR)the husband of one wife, (CS)managing their children and their own households well. 13 For (CT)those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Godliness

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

(CU)He[j] was manifested in the flesh,
    vindicated[k] by the Spirit,[l]
        (CV)seen by angels,
(CW)proclaimed among the nations,
    (CX)believed on in the world,
        (CY)taken up in glory.

Some Will Depart from the Faith

Now (CZ)the Spirit expressly says that (DA)in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to (DB)deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of (DC)liars whose consciences are seared, (DD)who forbid marriage and (DE)require abstinence from foods (DF)that God created (DG)to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For (DH)everything created by God is good, and (DI)nothing is to be rejected if it is (DJ)received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy (DK)by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

(DL)If you put these things before the brothers,[m] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have (DM)followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, (DN)silly myths. Rather (DO)train yourself for godliness; for while (DP)bodily training is of some value, godliness (DQ)is of value in every way, as (DR)it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is (DS)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive,[n] because we have our hope set on the living God, (DT)who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach (DU)these things. 12 (DV)Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers (DW)an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 (DX)Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you (DY)by prophecy when the council of elders (DZ)laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them,[o] so that (EA)all may see your progress. 16 (EB)Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save (EC)both yourself and (ED)your hearers.

Instructions for the Church

(EE)Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, (EF)younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows (EG)who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn (EH)to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for (EI)this is pleasing in the sight of God. She (EJ)who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and (EK)continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but (EL)she who is self-indulgent is (EM)dead even while she lives. (EN)Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for (EO)members of his household, he has (EP)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been (EQ)the wife of one husband,[p] 10 and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has (ER)shown hospitality, (ES)has washed the feet of the saints, has (ET)cared for the afflicted, and has (EU)devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when (EV)their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry 12 and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith. 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also (EW)gossips and (EX)busybodies, saying what they should not. 14 So I would have (EY)younger widows marry, bear children, (EZ)manage their households, and (FA)give the adversary no occasion for slander. 15 (FB)For some have already strayed after Satan. 16 If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those (FC)who are truly widows.

17 Let the elders (FD)who rule well be considered worthy of (FE)double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, (FF)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, (FG)“The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except (FH)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, (FI)rebuke them in the presence of all, (FJ)so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels (FK)I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, (FL)doing nothing from partiality. 22 (FM)Do not be hasty in the (FN)laying on of hands, nor (FO)take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 23 (No longer drink only water, but (FP)use a little wine (FQ)for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.) 24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and (FR)even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

(FS)Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants[q] regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, (FT)so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are (FU)brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

(FV)Teach and urge these things. If anyone (FW)teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with (FX)the sound[r] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching (FY)that accords with godliness, (FZ)he is puffed up with conceit and (GA)understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for (GB)controversy and for (GC)quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people (GD)who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, (GE)imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But (GF)godliness (GG)with contentment is great gain, for (GH)we brought nothing into the world, and[s] we cannot take anything out of the world. But (GI)if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But (GJ)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, (GK)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that (GL)plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of (GM)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, (GN)O man of God, (GO)flee these things. (GP)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 (GQ)Fight the good fight of the faith. (GR)Take hold of the eternal life (GS)to which you were called and about which you made (GT)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 (GU)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, (GV)who in his testimony before[t] Pontius Pilate made (GW)the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until (GX)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display (GY)at the proper time—he who is (GZ)the blessed and only Sovereign, (HA)the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 (HB)who alone has immortality, (HC)who dwells in (HD)unapproachable light, (HE)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in (HF)this present age, charge them (HG)not to be haughty, nor (HH)to set their hopes on (HI)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (HJ)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, (HK)to be rich in good works, to be generous and (HL)ready to share, 19 thus (HM)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may (HN)take hold of (HO)that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. (HP)Avoid the (HQ)irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

(HR)Grace be with you.[u]
