¹⁵ For the Lord will strike Israel so that they will^[a] shake as a reed shakes in water. He will uproot Israel from this good soil that he gave to their ancestors.^(A) He will scatter them beyond the Euphrates^(B) because they made their Asherah poles, angering the Lord.^(C)

²³ They also built for themselves high places,^(A) sacred pillars,^(B) and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree;

⁴ He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.^(A) He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made,^(B) for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan.^[a]

⁷ Manasseh set up the carved image of Asherah, which he made, in the temple that the Lord had spoken about to David and his son Solomon: “I will establish my name forever in this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.^(A)
