New English Translation
3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in his ancestor[a] David’s footsteps at the beginning of his reign.[b] He did not seek the Baals, 4 but instead sought the God of his ancestors[c] and obeyed[d] his commands, unlike the Israelites.[e] 5 The Lord made his kingdom secure;[f] all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he became very wealthy and greatly respected.[g]

3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David(A) before him. He did not consult the Baals 4 but sought(B) the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel. 5 The Lord established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts(C) to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.(D)
