²⁵ He restored Israel’s border^(A) from Lebo-hamath^(B) as far as the Sea of the Arabah,^(C) according to the word the Lord, the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant, the prophet Jonah^(D) son of Amittai from Gath-hepher.^(E)

Jonah’s Preaching

3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:^(A)

³⁹ But He answered them,^(A) “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.^{(B) 40} For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights,^(C) so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. ⁴¹ The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it,^(D) because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and look—something greater than Jonah is here!^(E)

⁴ An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of^[a] Jonah.”^(A) Then He left them and went away.

The Sign of Jonah

²⁹ As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: “This generation^(A) is an evil generation.^(B) It demands a sign,^(C) but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.^{[a](D) 30} For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man^(E) will be to this generation.
