Only (A)the high places were not eliminated; (B)the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. Now it came about, as soon as the kingdom was firmly in his hand, that he [a](C)killed his servants who had [b]killed the king, his father. But he did not put the sons of [c]the murderers to death, in [d]obedience to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, as the Lord commanded, saying, “(D)The fathers shall not be put to death for the sons, nor the sons be put to death for the fathers; but (E)each shall be put to death for his own sin.”

After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed(B) the officials(C) who had murdered his father the king. Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law(D) of Moses where the Lord commanded: “Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](E)
