Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:

And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Greeting

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

(A)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

God’s Final Judgment and Glory

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that (B)we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God (C)for your patience and faith (D)in all your persecutions and [a]tribulations that you endure, which is (E)manifest[b] evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, (F)for which you also suffer; (G)since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with [c]tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled (H)rest with us when (I)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (J)These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and (K)from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, (L)to be (M)glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who [d]believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would (N)count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and (O)the work of faith with power, 12 (P)that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Great Apostasy

Now, brethren, (Q)concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (R)and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, (S)not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of [e]Christ had come. Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come (T)unless the falling away comes first, and (U)the man of [f]sin is revealed, (V)the son of perdition, who opposes and (W)exalts himself (X)above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits [g]as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For (Y)the [h]mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [i]He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, (Z)whom the Lord will consume (AA)with the breath of His mouth and destroy (AB)with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is (AC)according to the working of Satan, with all power, (AD)signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among (AE)those who perish, because they did not receive (AF)the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And (AG)for this reason God will send them strong delusion, (AH)that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but (AI)had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Fast

13 But we are [j]bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God (AJ)from the beginning (AK)chose you for salvation (AL)through [k]sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for (AM)the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, (AN)stand fast and hold (AO)the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our [l]epistle.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, (AP)who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and (AQ)good hope by grace, 17 comfort your hearts (AR)and [m]establish you in every good word and work.

Pray for Us

Finally, brethren, (AS)pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and (AT)that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; (AU)for not all have faith.

But (AV)the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and (AW)guard you from the evil one. And (AX)we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.

Now may (AY)the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (AZ)that you withdraw (BA)from every brother who walks (BB)disorderly and not according to the tradition which [n]he received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; nor did we eat anyone’s bread [o]free of charge, but worked with (BC)labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, not because we do not have (BD)authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are (BE)busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and [p]exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ (BF)that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.

13 But as for you, brethren, (BG)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this [q]epistle, note that person and (BH)do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (BI)Yet do not count him as an enemy, (BJ)but [r]admonish him as a brother.

Benediction

16 Now may (BK)the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.

17 (BL)The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every [s]epistle; so I write.

18 (BM)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Greeting

(A)Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving

(B)We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers,[a] as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore (C)we ourselves boast about you (D)in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith (E)in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring.

The Judgment at Christ's Coming

This is (F)evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be (G)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— since indeed God considers it (H)just (I)to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant (J)relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when (K)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (L)with his mighty angels (M)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those (N)who do not know God and on those who (O)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of (P)eternal destruction, (Q)away from[b] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 (R)when he comes on (S)that day (T)to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our (U)testimony to you (V)was believed. 11 To this end we (W)always pray for you, that our God may (X)make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every (Y)work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus (Z)may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Man of Lawlessness

Now concerning (AA)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (AB)being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers,[c] not to be quickly shaken in mind or (AC)alarmed, either (AD)by a spirit or a (AE)spoken word, or (AF)a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that (AG)the day of the Lord has come. (AH)Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, (AI)unless the rebellion comes first, and (AJ)the man of lawlessness[d] is revealed, (AK)the son of destruction,[e] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (AL)proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For (AM)the mystery of lawlessness (AN)is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then (AO)the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus (AP)will kill with (AQ)the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by (AR)the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan (AS)with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for (AT)those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore (AU)God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe (AV)what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned (AW)who did not believe the truth but (AX)had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Firm

13 But (AY)we ought always to give thanks to God for you, (AZ)brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you (BA)as the firstfruits[f] (BB)to be saved, (BC)through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through (BD)our gospel, (BE)so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, (BF)stand firm and hold to (BG)the traditions that you were taught by us, either (BH)by our spoken word or by (BI)our letter.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, (BJ)who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good (BK)hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and (BL)establish them in every good work and word.

Pray for Us

Finally, brothers,[g] (BM)pray for us, that (BN)the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[h] as happened among you, and (BO)that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For (BP)not all have faith. But (BQ)the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and (BR)guard you against (BS)the evil one.[i] And (BT)we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord (BU)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, (BV)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (BW)that you keep away from any (BX)brother (BY)who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know (BZ)how you ought to imitate us, because (CA)we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but (CB)with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was (CC)not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves (CD)an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: (CE)If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you (CF)walk in idleness, not busy at work, but (CG)busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[j]

13 As for you, brothers, (CH)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and (CI)have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (CJ)Do not regard him as an enemy, but (CK)warn him as a brother.

Benediction

16 Now may (CL)the Lord of peace himself (CM)give you peace at all times in every way. (CN)The Lord be with you all.

17 I, Paul, write (CO)this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. 18 (CP)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

12 And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,

13 Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

14 And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:

15 But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

16 And he drave them from the judgment seat.

17 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

20 When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not;

21 But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

22 And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.

23 And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:

28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

And all the men were about twelve.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

12 When Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him to the [a]judgment seat, 13 saying, “This fellow persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.”

14 And when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or wicked crimes, O Jews, there would be reason why I should bear with you. 15 But if it is a (A)question of words and names and your own law, look to it yourselves; for I do not want to be a judge of such matters. 16 And he drove them from the judgment seat. 17 Then [b]all the Greeks took (B)Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. But Gallio took no notice of these things.

Paul Returns to Antioch

18 So Paul still remained [c]a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. (C)He had his hair cut off at (D)Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow. 19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay a longer time with them, he did not consent, 21 but took leave of them, saying, (E)“I[d] must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, (F)God willing.” And he sailed from Ephesus.

22 And when he had landed at (G)Caesarea, and [e]gone up and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch. 23 After he had spent some time there, he departed and went over the region of (H)Galatia and Phrygia [f]in order, (I)strengthening all the disciples.

Ministry of Apollos

24 (J)Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being (K)fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, (L)though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, (M)he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, (N)showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

Paul at Ephesus

19 And it happened, while (O)Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through (P)the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

So they said to him, (Q)“We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”

So they said, (R)“Into John’s baptism.”

Then Paul said, (S)“John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

When they heard this, they were baptized (T)in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had (U)laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and (V)they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.

(W)And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading (X)concerning the things of the kingdom of God. But (Y)when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil (Z)of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 And (AA)this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Miracles Glorify Christ

11 Now (AB)God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (AC)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 (AD)Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists (AE)took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, [g]“We [h]exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul (AF)preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”

16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, [i]overpowered them, and prevailed against [j]them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and (AG)fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came (AH)confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 (AI)So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

The Riot at Ephesus

21 (AJ)When these things were accomplished, Paul (AK)purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through (AL)Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, (AM)I must also see Rome.” 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, (AN)Timothy and (AO)Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.

12 But when Gallio was (A)proconsul of Achaia, (B)the Jews[a] made a united attack on Paul and (C)brought him before the tribunal, 13 saying, “This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to (D)the law.” 14 But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious (E)crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. 15 But (F)since it is a matter of questions about words and names and (G)your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things.” 16 And he drove them from the tribunal. 17 And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this.

Paul Returns to Antioch

18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of (H)the brothers[b] and set sail for Syria, and with him (I)Priscilla and Aquila. At (J)Cenchreae (K)he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19 And they came to (L)Ephesus, and he left them there, but (M)he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. 21 But on taking leave of them he said, “I will return to you (N)if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus.

22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he (O)went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23 After spending some time there, he departed and (P)went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, (Q)strengthening all the disciples.

Apollos Speaks Boldly in Ephesus

24 Now a Jew named (R)Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, (S)competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in (T)the way of the Lord. And (U)being fervent in spirit,[c] he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only (V)the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when (W)Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him (X)the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to (Y)Achaia, (Z)the brothers encouraged him and (AA)wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, (AB)he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures (AC)that the Christ was Jesus.

Paul in Ephesus

19 And it happened that while (AD)Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed (AE)through the inland[d] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, (AF)“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, (AG)we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, (AH)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into (AI)John's baptism.” And Paul said, (AJ)“John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (AK)to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, (AL)they were baptized in[e] the name of the Lord Jesus. And (AM)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and (AN)they began speaking in tongues and (AO)prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.

And (AP)he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them (AQ)about the kingdom of God. (AR)But when some became stubborn and (AS)continued in unbelief, speaking evil of (AT)the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.[f] 10 This continued for (AU)two years, so that (AV)all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

The Sons of Sceva

11 And (AW)God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (AX)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and (AY)the evil spirits came out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish (AZ)exorcists (BA)undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, (BB)“I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, (BC)“Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all[g] of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and (BD)the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, (BE)confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord (BF)continued to increase and prevail mightily.

A Riot at Ephesus

21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit (BG)to pass through (BH)Macedonia and Achaia and (BI)go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, (BJ)I must also see Rome.” 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of (BK)his helpers, (BL)Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia (BM)for a while.
