16 Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become more and more godless,(A) 17 and their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,(B) 18 who have deviated from the truth by saying that [the] resurrection has already taken place and are upsetting the faith of some.(C) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands, bearing this inscription, “The Lord knows those who are his”; and, “Let everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord avoid evil.”(D)

New International Version
16 Avoid godless chatter,(A) because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus(B) and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,(C) and they destroy the faith of some.(D) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,(E) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”(F) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord(G) must turn away from wickedness.”
