(A)Paul answered, “My fellow Israelites, I did not know that he was the High Priest. The scripture says, ‘You must not speak evil of the ruler of your people.’”

(B)When Paul saw that some of the group were Sadducees and the others were Pharisees, he called out in the Council, “Fellow Israelites! I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees. I am on trial here because of the hope I have that the dead will rise to life!”

As soon as he said this, the Pharisees and Sadducees started to quarrel, and the group was divided.

Paul replied, “Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’[a](A)

Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees(B) and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers,(C) I am a Pharisee,(D) descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”(E) When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
