14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to (A)Arioch, the captain of the king’s [a]bodyguard, who had gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon; 15 he answered and said to Arioch, a powerful [b]official for the king, “For what reason is the law from the king so [c]urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. 16 So Daniel went in and sought from the king that he would [d]give him time, in order that he might declare the interpretation to the king.

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
