7 The king called out loudly to bring in the (A)conjurers, the [a]Chaldeans, and the diviners. The king answered and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Any man who can read this writing and declare its interpretation to me shall be (B)clothed with purple and have a (C)necklace of gold around his neck and rule with power as [b](D)third ruler in the kingdom.” 8 Then all the king’s wise men came in, but (E)they could not read the writing or make known its interpretation to the king. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly (F)alarmed, and the [c](G)splendor of his face changed further, and his nobles were perplexed.

7 The king summoned the enchanters,(A) astrologers[a](B) and diviners.(C) Then he said to these wise(D) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(E) and he will be made the third(F) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(G)
8 Then all the king’s wise men(H) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(I) 9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(J) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
