17 moreover, you have seen their detestable things and their idols of (A)wood, stone, silver, and gold, which they had with them— 18 (B)lest there be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you (C)a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood. 19 And it will be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will [a]bless himself in his heart, saying, ‘I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order [b]to sweep away the watered land with the dry.’

19 When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing(D) on themselves, thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,”(E) they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
