⁵ All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.

9 “Hear, O Israel: you are ^(A)to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations ^(B)greater and mightier than yourselves, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

²⁰ When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow ^(A)until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

¹² So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the ^(A)Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”
