¹⁶ The Lord said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors,^(A) and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods^(B) of the land they are entering. They will abandon me^(C) and break the covenant^(D) I have made with them. ¹⁷ My anger will burn against them on that day;^(E) I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey.^(F) Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, ‘Haven’t these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us?’

³ King Shalmaneser^(A) of Assyria attacked him,^(B) and Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute. ⁴ But the king of Assyria caught Hoshea in a conspiracy: He had sent envoys to So king of Egypt^(C) and had not paid tribute to the king of Assyria as in previous years.^[a] Therefore the king of Assyria arrested him and put him in prison.
