⁷ Who made the great lights,
    for his mercy endures forever;
⁸ The sun to rule the day,
    for his mercy endures forever;
⁹ The moon and stars to rule the night,^(A)
    for his mercy endures forever;

² Instead either fire, or wind, or the swift air,
    or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water,
    or the luminaries of heaven, the governors^[a] of the world, they considered gods.^(A)
3 Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods,
    let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these;
    for the original source of beauty fashioned them.^(B)
4 Or if they were struck by their might and energy,
    let them realize from these things how much more powerful is the one who made them.^(C)

³⁵     Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun to light the day,
    moon and stars to light the night;
Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar,
    whose name is Lord of hosts:^(A)
