26 I call heaven and earth this day to witness against you, that you shall all quickly perish from the land which you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You shall not live in it for any length of time but shall be utterly wiped out.(A) 27 The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and there shall remain but a handful of you among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you shall serve gods that are works of human hands, of wood and stone, gods which can neither see nor hear, neither eat nor smell.(B)

33 And you I will scatter among the nations(A) at the point of my drawn sword, leaving your countryside desolate and your cities deserted. 34 Then shall the land, during the time it lies waste, make up its lost sabbaths, while you are in the land of your enemies; then shall the land have rest and make up for its sabbaths(B) 35 during all the time that it lies desolate, enjoying the rest that you would not let it have on your sabbaths when you lived there.

36 Those of you who survive in the lands of their enemies, I will make so fainthearted that the sound of a driven leaf will pursue them, and they shall run as if from the sword, and fall though no one pursues them; 37 stumbling over one another as if to escape a sword, while no one is after them—so helpless will you be to take a stand against your foes! 38 You shall perish among the nations, swallowed up in your enemies’ country. 39 Those of you who survive will waste away in the lands of their enemies, for their own and their ancestors’ guilt.(C)

33 I will scatter(A) you among the nations(B) and will draw out my sword(C) and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste,(D) and your cities will lie in ruins.(E) 34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate(F) and you are in the country of your enemies;(G) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest(H) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.

36 “‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf(I) will put them to flight.(J) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.(K) 37 They will stumble over one another(L) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.(M) 38 You will perish(N) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.(O) 39 Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’(P) sins they will waste away.(Q)
