Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,(A) because they will turn your sons away from Me to worship other gods. Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.

Israel’s Intermarriage with Pagans

After these things had been done, the leaders approached me and said: “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves(A) from the surrounding peoples whose detestable practices(B) are like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.(C) Indeed, the Israelite men[a] have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed(D) has become mixed with the surrounding peoples.(E) The leaders[b] and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”(F)

Ezra’s Prayer About Intermarriage

After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate(A) from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites,(B) Ammonites,(C) Moabites,(D) Egyptians and Amorites.(E) They have taken some of their daughters(F) as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled(G) the holy race(H) with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.”(I)

10 Now, our God, what can we say in light of[a] this? For we have abandoned the commands 11 You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: “The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices.(A) 12 So do not give your daughters to their sons in marriage or take their daughters for your sons.(B) Never seek their peace or prosperity,(C) so that you will be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.” 13 After all that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and terrible guilt—though You, our God, have punished us less than our sins deserve and have allowed us to survive[b](D) 14 should we break Your commands again and intermarry with the peoples who commit these detestable practices?(E) Wouldn’t You become so angry with us that You would destroy us, leaving no survivors?(F)

10 “But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands(A) 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering(B) to possess is a land polluted(C) by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices(D) they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. 12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(E) at any time, that you may be strong(F) and eat the good things(G) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(H)

13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(I) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(J) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(K) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(L) leaving us no remnant(M) or survivor?

23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.(A) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples but could not speak Hebrew.[a](B) 25 I rebuked them, cursed them, beat some of their men, and pulled out their hair.(C) I forced them to take an oath(D) before God and said: “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or yourselves!(E) 26 Didn’t King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations. He was loved by his God and God made him king over all Israel, yet foreign women drew him into sin.(F) 27 Why then should we hear about you doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”(G)

28 Even one of the sons of Jehoiada, son of Eliashib the high priest,(H) had become a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite.(I) So I drove him away from me.(J)

29 Remember them, my God, for defiling the priesthood as well as the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.(K)

30 So I purified them from everything foreign(L) and assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.(M)

23 Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married(A) women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.(B) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language(C) of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath(D) in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.(E) 26 Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him.(F) He was loved by his God,(G) and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.(H) 27 Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying(I) foreign women?”

28 One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib(J) the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat(K) the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.

29 Remember(L) them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.(M)

30 So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign,(N) and assigned them duties, each to his own task.
