³ He humbled^(A) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,^(B) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach^(C) you that man does not live on bread^(D) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth^(E) of the Lord.^(F)

¹³ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

² After fasting forty days and forty nights,^(A) he was hungry. ³ The tempter^(B) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(C) tell these stones to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’^[a]”^(D)
