Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(B) with large cities(C) that have walls up to the sky.(D) The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(E)

28 (A)However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 (B)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. (C)And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

30 But (D)Caleb quietened the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 (E)Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So (F)they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and (G)all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the (H)Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the (I)Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves (J)like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(L) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(M) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(N) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(O) 33 We saw the Nephilim(P) there (the descendants of Anak(Q) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(R) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
